The Chemung Mine was part of
the Masonic Mining District which was founded in 1860, followed by the town of
Masonic in 1902. The Chemung Mine was founded sometime later in about 1909 and
subsequently led to the construction of an entire self sufficient on site
mining operation consisting of Mill, Mine offices, Employee Bunk House and
General Store. Located about 2.5 miles from the town of Masonic, the Chemung
Mine was professionally operated off and on in to 1938 and was the last
operating mine in the Masonic District. The Chemung operated long after the
abandonment of Masonic and other district mines which had either played out or
suffered great decline in the 1920's.
During the 1950's and 1960's
a lone prospector by the name of Elton "Heinie" Heinemeyer worked the
Chemung tunnel and supported himself with his findings but never hit the big strike.
This is an awesome place to explore and take in the views of Bridgeport below.
A couple of other ghost Towner's claim this site has paranormal activity, but
I have never witnessed anything out of the ordinary during my several trips
here.
